Louisa Patterson would have settled for just being plain. As it is, though, there's no avoiding the fact that she's simply ugly. She's inherited the worst of all the family features and is graced with face not entirely unlike a horse's. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, she also stands to inherit enough money to make her the most sought after prize on the marriage market to the scores of penniless young men now haunting her grandfather's estate and singing her virtues. But Louisa is terribly lonely. All she wants is to be liked for herself, not her money. She begins to think this is impossible, until she stumbles into a well-hidden cave...

Duncan Traherne is a vampire with a conscience. Fearful of killing people by draining their life forces completely, he's retreated into an isolated cave and made it his home, resigning himself to a life of solitude, until one day that solitude is interrupted by a most prepossessing young lady...

This is a novella which isn't much like Karen Ranney's other books. There's no great conflict and no real suspense. It's sweet, but forgettable. Worth a read if you want a quick, light romance, but don't expect a torrid love story. About PG-15. No majorly steamy love scenes here.

A Dance in the Dark edition by Karen Ranney Romance eBooks Reviews

I love this series, got my interest with I found entertaining, waiting for more on books like this to buy.
I love reading Karen Ranneys' books. And this "short" story is no exception. I downloaded it to my . I thought I knew how the story would go. Take the ride, you will not be disappointed. Beautifully written.
I'm not usually over-fond of novellas, but this one was very, very lovely! Should have suspected, since I always like Karen Ranney's books. Very much worth a read. It would be very interesting to see more stories of others like Douglas, trying to hold that delicate balance ,,, with the help of their lovers who are friends also.
One person is a rich socialite who considers herself ugly and apparently everyone else
does too except for her grandfather; the other is a mysterious hermit who lives in a
cave that she stumbles upon one day. As they continue to visit each other, they slowly
get to know about themselves. Until one day he makes her forgetr. . .will they meet again?
Interesting read!
This was a surprise. Written without being overwritten, without the repetition one finds in so many historical romance stories that makes one want to scream "I got it the first time!". No melodrama. Two strong characters. It was refreshing see the relationship develop--slowly, methodically, as they embarked upon learning about one another (none of the "she saw him and felt something she'd never felt before" nonsense). The moral of the story (without being preachy or judgmental) seems quite appropriate for our current time when so much is predicated upon superficiality and appearances. Just a nicely paced, nice little story.
like it very much.
This was good short story from Ranney. It as a bit different from her usual but I truly enjoyed the read. No other spoilers, sorry.
