It was boring, I couldn’t even get into it. I read the first book, which I also found incredibly dull. In fact that one was so boring, I was too angry to even finish it. This one was no better. Sorry Robert. I could at least appreciate some of the writing style and imagery.Tags : Luthiel's Song: The War of Mists [Robert Marston Fanney, Matthew R. Luthiel Song The War of Mists Robert Marston Fanney Matthew R Friedman 9780976422617 Books Reviews
This is the same review I wrote in for "Luthiel's Song Dreams of the Ringed Vale."
If the whole series was available, so that I knew there was a conclusion, I would probably read and enjoy the bunch. I liked the writing, I enjoyed the characters and the creatures, and the story kept my interest. My main problem with both of the "Luthiel" books was the way the author 'ended' them.
In "Luthiel's Song Dreams of the Ringed Vale", the book didn't seem like it had an ending to me; it was more like the author just stopped writing in the middle of the story.
In the second book, "Luthiel's Song War of Mists", I thought the ending felt contrived, just to make people wonder what will happen next. Smart characters turned stupid, cautious characters turned lackadaisical, strong fighters get weak, etc. When an ending feels contrived like that, it really bugs me.
I think this may be done to encourage people to buy the next book in a series. I can put up with that to a point, but it seems like these books took it too far.
I've stopped reading several series because of this. "Streams of Silver The Legend of Drizzt, Book V" felt the same way. I haven't read any more of the books since.
If the endings were more well thought-out, I would be looking forward to the next book. As it is, if I happen across it when it's available, I might buy it. But I won't be waiting for it.
I liked the story line...it is interesting and the great characters are still endearing. But....when I read fantasy...I want to read fantasy...I do not want a "spirituality 101" class or a speach on the virtues of being a vegetarian! This type of preaching was not obvious in the first book . Not that there's anything wrong with the values that are presented...I just found it very irritating when one of the characters started on a long winded preaching session, it completely slowed the pace of the story, I skimmed over many parts. For my personal education I prefer to choose my topics and teachers...when I read fantasy it is for leasure.
Having said that...I will read the sequel (knowing I will need to speed read through some parts), I enjoyed the books enough to want to learn of the fate of Luthiel and others I grew to care about.
If you enjoy some basic spirituality teaching expicitly shared in a fantasy story...you will probably very much enjoy this book. The author is creative and the story is good, I just hope there will be more subtlety in the next book...
Like "Dreams of the Ringed Vale", "The War of the Mists" was clearly written with loving attention to detail in beautiful, lyrical language. Unfortunately, this installation doesn't measure up to the first in terms of story and plot. I found the first half to be suspenseful and well-paced but the second half felt like a somewhat drawn-out prelude to...something more. I understand that the upcoming third installment is the "something more" but I can't help feeling a tiny bit cheated. I think the problem, for me, was the excellent build in the first half to a climactic event with which the second half couldn't compete. After that mid-point, it felt like the remainder of the book was building to something equally important, but it just never quite happened.
Having said all that, I'm still giving it 4 stars and am eagerly awaiting the third installment. It's well-written, gorgeous and Luthiel is an amazing female character surrounded by an endearing supporting cast.
First off let me say while I love what can be considered epic fantasy there are few that I love within a few chapters, and there are even fewer that I get attached to and read in only a few days. This is truly a wonderful series and I can't wait for the third.
This is as rich as the first and it gives more life and depth to an already wonderful world. Even though I lost a favorite character of mine I gained a few more. Luthiel has a feeling of realness about her that made me feel close to her, that she and I share something. Fanney did a wonderful job with these books and I look forward to more.
I really enjoyed the first book, Luthiel's Song, but this one has been a slog. The story is still interesting but the pacing is painfully slow. I usually read one book at a time, straight through. I've put this aside to read another book twice, so far, and I'm only halfway done. I want to know what happens, so I'll finish it, but I've been disappointed this time.
I just finished this 2nd book of the series. At least I assume there will be 3rd book. I really like the characters, especially Othalas and Melkion. I have to say that the author is a bit preachy but they were not totally intolerable points. However, I constantly was made to feel that I had read things, names, story lines, from this book somewhere else, i.e., J.R.R. Tolkein. Fanney is obviously a fan of Tolkein but, ummm, some of the written words were just too close to LOTR for me. With that said, I did enjoy the books but the ending was just horrible. If you end a book with a cliffhanger like this, you better be in the process of publishing the next book in the series.
Oh well, onto the next series.
P.S. (I love my kindle).
It was boring, I couldn’t even get into it. I read the first book, which I also found incredibly dull. In fact that one was so boring, I was too angry to even finish it. This one was no better. Sorry Robert. I could at least appreciate some of the writing style and imagery.
