223 Orchard Street Renee Ryan Karen Peakes Books Reviews
Enjoyed the story of immigration and the toll of took on people. Good book good read would be interested in another book about Katie and th life together
Actually haven't finished this book. A little predictable. Interesting history
The author managed to make each character come alive and have great depth. Good job. We have fortuitous hard it was for immigrants to come to Ellis island. They came, they worked hard and persevered at a time when there were no guarantees or handouts.
This is a sweet story set around 1900 in New York City. Through the historical fiction, you get a good feel for the gritty surroundings of so many poor immigrants pouring into the country. The formal way in which men and women relate to each other reminded me a lot of Jane Eyre, even though that book was set at an earlier time. Overall, this book is a warm, personal story that I didn't want to put down. Good plot and nice easy writing style by the author. Recommended!
This lovely story follows a young immigrant woman as she struggles to survive and thrive in the tenements of New York City.
The story was a bit predictable and there were a couple characters, relationships, that though they served their purpose in the story, were left hanging. I may have scored higher if they had been brought to conclusion.
Regardless, it is a light easy read and if you enjoyed Jane Healey's The Saturday Evening Girls Club and Brooklyn by Colm Toibin, you will like 223 Orchard Steet.
If you like romantic fairytales then you will like this book. I finished it only because I paid $4.99. It was torture.
I was hoping for a compelling historical novel but discovered after I was drawn into the book that it was really a romance novel... A "Hallmark-like movie" in print. Not my preference, but I was already well into the story. In my mind, the romance got in the way of what could have been a good, fully developed storyline of immigrant life in the early 1900s. The story was told through conversation between the characters and descriptive thoughts and feelings. It was well-written, other than description tended to be a bit long and repetitive at times. If you are looking for a light, quick, easy read--a feel-good story--you will enjoy this book.
What a wonderful book. This is the first book I have read from this author and it will not be my last. Renee Ryan is a terrific writer and I can't wait to read more from her. Thank you Ms. Ryan
