Strong, silent types are my catnip so I have been eagerly awaiting Aden' s story. It was everything I have come to expect from this series thrilling, gripping, well written and romantic. Aden, leader of the Arrows has seen a new world full of possibilities open up after the fall of Silence and with the mating of his best friend Vasic. He wants the same not only for himself but for his fellow Arrows. As the leader he realizes that even in this he must lead and teach by example and so he gives free reign to his feelings for his fellow Arrow commander Zaira Neve. Zaira and Aden have been friends since they were children when a deeply damaged, almost feral Zaira was brought in to be trained as an Arrow. When they are both abducted by an unknown and shadowy enemy Zaira is forced to confront her feelings for Aden but she refuses to give in to the fury of emotions inside her. She fears that her damaged psyche is beyond repair, insanity is a genetic given and that her past has made her irredeemable. But Aden isn't willing to surrender Zaira to the darkness. Meanwhile, a new enemy has emerged this time uniting all three races with one goal, to undermine the new ruling Coalition and create chaos and worldwide dissension and killing the leader of the powerful Arrow squad is the first step in achieving this goal.
I loved the new direction that the series is taking. New packs are introduced, other characters that have made previous appearances are more fully fleshed out as ones from previous books make short but powerful cameos. In short, the incredible world building that has made this series so amazing continues. Now that Silence has fallen and Pure Psy defeated, the series is clearly moving in a new direction and it is with this book that all the pieces are moving into place. So, for me this felt like a transition book where it is all being set up and that means that inevitably the romance takes a back seat to the action. Aden was a drool worthy hero and I loved how the author turned the tables and made Zaira the tortured, damaged one afraid that she was incapable of love or deserving of being loved. I still had hard time connecting with her and being swept up in the romance. Every interaction between Aden and Zaira seemed to be interrupted by the external conflict and so I never felt connected to them. I also thought there was way too many cutesy kids running around. I love kids and I love to see previous couples starting families but in this case the kids were all new characters and less was definitely more. That being said I enjoyed this book and it is a must read for any fan of the series. Yes, the lack of steam and scorching, heart rending romance (thinking Heart of Obsidian sigh) was a disappointment but the exciting new storyline kept me riveted and if anything this book is worth reading if only for the revelation of Aden' s true power as long time readers know Aden is no medic. The revelation, I thought was a little too far into the story but it was awesome. I can't wait for the next installment in the series.
Series Psy-Changeling #14

Zaira Neve Arrow. Dangerous. Strong. Protective.

--What’s Going On--
Aden is hoping to led the Arrows safely into the new world without Silence. He cares for every single Arrow under his command and he wants to make sure that they won't become targets in this new world. However, he knows that his people won't completely trust emotion until they begin to see the leadership expressing it. Zaira has been friends with Aden ever since she was a feral child brought into the Arrow program. She'll do anything to keep Aden safe but she's not sure she can stand by him as a partner in life and love. Zaira has a rage inside her that she doesn't trust to not turn on Aden.
--What I Liked and Didn’t Liked--
The Writing and Plot -- It hurts me to say this but I didn't really connect with this book and it's probably my least favorite of the whole series. I've been reading the Psy-Changeling books since they first came out in 2006 and it's hands down my favorite series. Nalini Singh's writing is still spot on and her storytelling is wonderful but I struggle with her characters in this one (explained below). The overall world building was interesting as always and I'm really digging into this new Post-Silence world and I love seeing all these established characters dealing with the changes. There's a lot of setup in this book for the books coming in the "second season" or the Trinity Series. We get to see more of the BlackSea changelings which I find absolutely fascinating and I hope this is a preview of how much we'll see of them in the future.
The Characters and Romance -- For me, my favorites in this series have always been the ones where it's two different "races" falling in love Psy-with-Changeling or Human-with-Changeling because you get all kinds of interesting interactions. The past few one in the series have all been focused on Psy-with-Psy and they haven't really resonated with me. I liked Aden but he also felt a bit flat to me, like so much of his personality is still being suppressed. We know he cares deeply for his Arrows, that his loyalty to Vasic is air-tight, and that he truly wants Zaira by his side in any way he can get her. However, all those feelings come across as muted and this makes it hard to really "feel" Aden as a real person. I was intrigued by his abilities and how he had kept them secret all this time but I wish we had gotten more hints along the way so that it didn't come out of left field. The real struggle for me was Zaira and the big reason this is 3 instead of 4 stars. I just couldn't connect with her and frankly, I think Singh did too good of a job convincing me of Zaira's damaged nature. Every time she would express concern over her rage getting out and hurting Aden, I worried as well, and not in a good way. Her obsession with Aden was also a little unnerving and it's didn't seem particularly healthy. I kept thinking how readers would feel if Zaira's obsessive behavior for Aden was swapped and it was Aden acting this way. I don't think readers would be very happy if it was Aden who was so aggressive, so possessive, so angry toward anyone who shows an interest, and if it were Aden completely losing it in the desert scene.
All of that being said, I still enjoyed their book but it truly was the other characters that really made this for me. I loved Remi and the RainFire pack and I really hope -- fingers crossed -- that we see more of them, please! I also loved watching The Valley be created and seeing Aden and Zaira interact with the Arrow children who are desperate for acceptance and a gentle hand. BlackSea was as intriguing as always and I want to know all their secrets.
