Val, a freshman track star, loves her life the way it is. Things seem good in her life until she meets Gavin, known as "Hit List Guy" at her high school. He's strange, and as her best friend, Lisa, says, dangerous. But Val can't resist his odd quirks. They draw her in like a moth to the flame. But things aren't so black and white when she begins to get emails and "gifts" from a secret admirer. Is it Gavin sending her the obsessive messages or a new threat altogether?

I liked the premise of this story, I really did. Most of the characters, with the exception of the antagonist, were flat. They seemed to have voices a lot older than the characters in the book. I also found myself skimming along through a huge portion of the story because some of the conversations, especially between Val and Lisa, were repetitive, to the point were several lines were actually repeated word for word in separate conversations.

However, I'm excited to read on to the next book in this series to see what happens with Val and Gavin.

Fearscape Horrorscape Book 1 eBook Nenia Campbell Reviews

I was surprised that I liked this book due to the fact that it was dealing with adolescent life, but I am a huge fan of 'stalker' lit; so I went for it.
This author was able to pull it off quite well. I guess the thing that pulled me in was that I am well aware that teens tend to 'feel' things very deeply, because of that, there are times when things can get intense.
I found myself challenged with this read in the manner of having to look up word definitions. This is a very well written book by an extremely educated author.
This author keeps you guessing and delivers a great finished product. I have already purchased Horrorscape, and even went so far as to purchase 'Terrorscape' from smashwords due to the fact that won't carry it. (due to censorship issues)
Her books are that good; good enough for me to hunt them down!
All in all, I'm very pleased with this read and I will most definitely be reading more of her work. She has gained a new fan for sure.
Fearscape is really not a romance. I admit it, the twisted anti-hero lover in me was really hoping I could salvage Gavin. Fictionally speaking, I can overlook a lot; but sadly Gavin just pushed the envelope way too often into "it puts the lotion on it's skin" territory.

Don't get me wrong he also managed to be hot, in that psychotically twisted way that I love...and I was willing to overlook my initial concerns of nerdiness (glasses, chess, archery) but when he started with the formal stilted speech, his journal and drawings and confessions of watching Val during track while hidden under the bleachers so he could...wham, right into lotion and skin territory.

Val was hard to relate to because I last saw 14 over 3 decades ago...so I'm guessing she was acting age appropriate. I did keep having an unbidden thought that made me feel somewhat guilty and almost as twisted as Gavin...but, she was not a worthy opponent. I get why he chose Val, it was just rather...unsporting of him.

Fearscape read quickly, didn't drag and kept my interest. I was somewhat taken aback by Val's parents agreeing to not involve the police; but people do strange things so it didn't feel outside the realm of possibility. The one issue I had with the story involved the ending...because I believe a little something called a subpoena would have come in to play and altered the outcome.

And in conclusion...Gavin is still a little hot.
Sexy, hot, terrifying, creepy, and the list goes on. A new age little red riding hood if you will. In any case I want this wolf to take me and make me his. Definitely worth the read, and plan to read the next in the series.
What a ride.

Nenia sure can weave a wicked little tale. I could feel myself being lured into the web just as surely as Val was, each step a calculated move to make her react in the way desired.

So very evil and calculated.

I liked Val, but she was a bit too sweet and innocent for me to really bond with her. I get why she was like that, but it still bothered me a little.

Gavin is an interesting character. So slick and creepy and brilliant. I can totally picture him in my mind, the slightly icy glint in his eyes as he dissects your inner thoughts right before your eyes.

The villain was a brilliant and down-right scary character, there are so few of them in stories these days, that when you come across a good one (or a decidedly evil one) you kind of savor them like a fine wine. This villain gave me chills and the made me cackle like a witch at how amazingly evil and yet amazingly awesome they are. Well done Nenia! Well done!

I loved the psychological thriller aspect, the mental play and the way Val was toyed with. All very creepy.

Where things fell down just a touch was the editing. Another pass through by an editor would do this justice, missed words, extra words, wrong word choices were sprinkled throughout. Just enough to snag my attention and draw me out of the scene.

If this was fixed, easily a 5 star book. If you are after a creepy psychological nail-biter, pick this one up today.
You want a cool main character? Here's your cool main character. Valerian Kimble, a fourteen-year-old high school student, is a talented artist and an experienced track runner. She has other things to do in life apart from finding a boyfriend.

You want a dangerous love interest? Here's your dangerous love interest. You don't even have to go supernatural for that one, Gavin Mecozzi is creepy enough all by himself. This eighteen-year-old fellow has an animalistic side, the side that is cruel and possessive. His human side, intelligent and calculating, makes him even scarier.

You want a new and different YA novel? Here's your new and different YA novel. Fearscape has all the familiar ingredients of a high school story, with some new elements thrown in. It's scary from beginning to end. No, wait, let me rephrase that - even after the end, it's still scary.
